Joining the BWF

If you are in the joinery and woodworking industry, whether as a manufacturer, or as a supplier of materials or services, you could benefit from membership of the BWF.

Primary Membership

Primary membership of the British Woodworking Federation is open to companies, firms or individuals whose main business is manufacturing joinery and woodworking products. For these purposes, joinery and woodworking products include engineered timber or structural components, timber frame construction and mouldings.

A company must have been trading for at least two years to qualify as a full member of the BWF. All prospective members are carefully vetted by the BWF, and are expected to comply with the Federation's Code of Conduct within 12 months of joining.

Subscriptions are calculated on a formula based on a company's declared annual turnover.

Provisional Membership

If a company opts for provisional membership, it is asked to pay part of its first subscription with the application, rather than once the application has been accepted. In return, it receives some information and can attend open members' meetings. They are expected to become full members on completing the normal application process, when they will pay the balance of the subscription and gain access to the full range of services. A provisional member can withdraw their application at any time before the process is complete, and will in that case be charged pro rata for each month of membership, with a minimum charge of the equivalent of three months' subscription.

Start-Up Membership

A company which has been trading for less than two years can join as a start-up member, in the expectation that they will progress to full membership. As part of the vetting process, start-up members have to provide additional references to show that they have the knowledge and experience to run a joinery business and that the company is financially stable.

Secondary Membership

Any company which is a member of one of the other Construction Confederation member federations (National Federation of Builders, National Contractors Federation or Major Contractors Group) and which engages in some joinery or woodworking activity can take advantage of a special arrangement between the federations to enable them to take membership of the BWF as a full member by paying an additional top-up fee.
