How the programme works

A Code is only respected if it incorporates regular independent verification. The programme of assessment visits is a fundamental element of the Code of Conduct, and all members receive an inspection and assessment visit once every four years. The assessors conduct a detailed inspection of the company, looking for evidence of compliance, and offer advice and assistance through the BWF where they find that the company does not yet meet the Code's requirements.

The previous round of inspections (which began in 2003) was formulated on the basis of the information drawn from an individual self-assessment exercise. This process helped us to identify the areas where companies needed specific assistance in achieving the Code's requirements.

discussing COCThe current phase of the BWF's Code of Conduct marks a progression in terms of the standards and the issues reflected in the Code assessment to ensure it continues to represent a standard of best practice. This is in response to the changing climate and attitudes within the industry since the Code of Conduct was launched, particularly in the use of sustainable timber, waste management and the environment.

Since all members should have written policies in place to cover complaints, health and safety, training, environment and waste management, the assessment questions now focus on how the policy and practice is implemented.

Additional questions have also been added to cover new areas of regulation or practice. We have decided the Code of Conduct assessments should be regulated more stringently and members should be more thoroughly monitored throughout to ensure that, once they have committed to the Code, they adhere to their deadlines.
