Why is certification important?

Third party certification tests and verifies a fire door's design, performance, manufacturing process and quality assurance from manufacture to installation.Testing a fire door, at a UKAS approved test facility, to BS476 part 22 or EN 1634, is the only sure way to prove that it is going to fulfil its rating. All fire door and doorset manufacturers and licensed convertors identify their products by a unique labelling system which defines the member's name contact details, the certification number, a unique serial number for each door and the rating.

By listing this information, the label provides traceability through the supply chain, ensuring the manufacturer can always be contacted if information on the fire door is required.

Why is traceability important?

The Scheme has a variety of labels to suit the ratings and requirements of different jobs. These labels display the member's name and phone number, and, where applicable, the certification number, a unique serial number and the rating. The label provides traceability through the supply chain, ensuring the manufacturer can always be contacted if further information on the fire door is required.

The Prime Fire Door Manufacturer will start by putting a label on the top edge of the fire door indicating the door's rating. He will record where the door has initially been sold to.

If a Licensed Converter then makes any adjustments to a fire door, such as fitting a vision panel, they will attach their own label next to that of the manufacturer and record where the door has then been sold. A separate label is placed on the head of a certificated frame, lining or casing.

The Certifire Certificate Number allows the door's test evidence to be checked, and if necessary, copies of the manufacturer's certificate and test summary held on file for future reference.

The Certifire listing of Fire Door Certificates and other accredited products may be dowloaded here. The Scheme has produced a Gap Tester to check doors are fitted correctly and to help view the label. For a free Gap Tester email us at firedoors@bwf.org.uk.
