Thinking of joinery software as one of your machinesGuest blog from Alan Turner, Managing Director of Joinerysoft. Joinerysoft are Headline Sponsors of BWF Members’ Day 2017 and associate members of BWF.

Ever thought of joinery software as one of your machines?

For those joinery businesses where every job is different, it is easy to assume that software packages may not be appropriate. Before you purchase a new machine, you investigate key questions such as how much it will benefit you and how relevant it is for all your different types of work. We recommend you follow the same process for software. Typically with a machine you might ask yourself:

How often will you use it? Is this something that can be used for many jobs or is it very specialised?

Will it speed up your processes and enable you to deliver more quickly for the customer?

Will it give you more accuracy and therefore cut down on error and wasted time?

Now let’s consider investment in software as a new machine for your workshop and then apply the same thought process as you would for a machine investment. The same questions can apply to software.

How often will you use it?

You need a software package that will work for as many jobs as possible. You need to find one that is designed specifically for bespoke joinery. They do exist. Does it enable you to choose a design and then change it to match your customers request? Is it easy to customise?

Will it speed up your processes and enable you to deliver more quickly for the customer?

You need a software package that will save you time. Where do you spend time now? Analyse how much time you spend on each element of your job, from quoting to production and then see how it compares.

Will it give you more accuracy and cut down on error and wasted time?

Will it give you clear images that can be used in the workshop and with the customer? Can all parties clearly see what they’ve agreed to, with true scale images providing clarity and detailed descriptions including fittings and finishing ensuring you all have the right information to start work without delay? Will it give you accurate and detailed lists of all materials that are needed for each job?

In our experience with time and cost savings from quoting right through to material ordering and production, there are many reasons why for most joinery businesses, having a software package brings benefits.
