The British Woodworking Federation (BWF), the trade association for the UK’s woodworking and joinery industry, has appointed Speed as its retained PR and communications consultancy following a competitive pitch process.

The BWF represents the interests of its 700 members, mostly manufacturing firms involved in the UK’s woodworking sector, which is worth £3.8bn a year to the economy. As well as encouraging more people to pursue a career in woodworking to fill an estimated labour gap of 4,260 jobs a year, the BWF is a campaigning force for fire door safety in public and private dwellings and the safe manufacture and installation of staircases.

Speed will deliver a multi-channel communications programme combining film and digital content with national and trade media relations, alongside public affairs activity to support senior parliamentary relationships and to promote change across the construction industry. The programme will focus specifically on fire door and stair safety, raising BWF’s profile, promoting its industry accreditation process and driving new membership.

Iain McIlwee, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation said: “Speed impressed us with their creative strategy, professionalism and fit with our team. They demonstrated a really good understanding of both our industry and the current policy landscape and suggested some exciting creative ideas that I look forward to seeing them bring to life.”

Speed’s Business and Corporate Director, Laura Tallett, said: “The British woodworking industry is facing a new year like no other. Political events following the Grenfell disaster, the impact of Brexit and an ongoing skills shortage make for interesting times, but the BWF is a proactive and dynamic organisation, providing a voice for members and spearheading positive changes across the industry. We’re delighted to be supporting their campaign work and helping them tell their story.”
