What was the project brief?
Precision Made Joinery were tasked with honouring heritage with craftsmanship as they played a key role in the extensive restoration of The Old Rectory, a Grade II Listed home in the Suffolk village of Fornham All Saints. Built in the early 16th century, with later additions in the 1800s, the property presented a unique and rewarding challenge – to sensitively restore and enhance a much-loved heritage home while preserving its architectural character.
How was the project approached?
Their involvement began in 2022 and spanned multiple phases, each requiring detailed attention to period accuracy and craftsmanship. The client’s goal was clear – retain the original charm and heritage of the building wherever possible. This philosophy guided every joinery decision they made.
What challenges were faced?
The most technically demanding element was the cut-string staircase. Structural challenges meant fitting steel supports above the entrance before work could even begin. Precision was crucial – the curved design required individually calculated balustrade spacing to meet modern regulations while following the natural arc of the staircase. The crowning touch was a continuous curved oak handrail – now a favourite feature of the homeowners and a talking point among guests.
The original entrance doors were beyond economical repair, but the team replicated them in their workshop down to the finest detail, ensuring the new doors were a faithful homage to the originals. Throughout the property, traditional-style windows were recreated with added draught seals for improved performance, while retaining single glazing to comply with listed building requirements. Internal panelling and shutters were reinstated to complete the restoration sympathetically.
What were the highlights of the project?
A standout achievement was the construction of a new gallery in the entrance hall, linking the original house to the 1830s north wing for the first time on the first floor. With differing floor levels surrounding the gallery, the team worked carefully with the grain and flow of the oak flooring to ensure a seamless and visually balanced finish across steps and landings.
Joinery extended beyond structural elements. The team crafted bespoke dressing room cabinetry and vanity units, pre-assembled, dismantled, and carefully reassembled on site – necessary due to the scale of the pieces and the restrictions of the existing staircases. These additions blend seamlessly into the home’s fabric, combining modern function with timeless form.
What was the outcome?
Every element of this project – every curve, joint, and hand-finished surface – reflects the team’s skill, dedication, and understanding of working with heritage properties. From design through to fitting, they supported the client in achieving their vision – a beautifully restored home that honours its history while standing proud for generations to come.
