Getting Your Levy’s Worth: ISO 9001 and Factory Production ControlMembers of the BWF who are in-scope and registered with CITB-ConstructionSkills can really get their Levy's worth through the BWF by getting up to £600 off the cost or gaining ISO 9001 and Basic Factory Production Control. Both of these services are available through the BWF's Total Support Services, a suite of service provision to help BWF members increase their business performance.

ISO 9001 is a standard that identifies the requirements for an organisation’s quality management system.  Basic Factory Production Control (FPC) is a more simplified version of the ISO 9001 standard, but still provides the basis for an effective quality management system.

By 2013, when the Building Regulations are set to change again, joinery manufacturers producing doors and windows will have to CE mark their products and a quality management/FPC is a mandatory part of the CE marking process.

BWF is urging the industry to act now to get the necessary procedures and process in place now before the changes come into effect. Basic FPC is the best solution for smaller joinery firms as it provides the systems required to meet these future changes in the Building Regulations, it is a more affordable option, and the aim is to allow companies to "top-up" their FPC processes to ISO 9001 at a later date if appropriate.

ISO 9001 suits medium to larger companies or those producing fire doors. It is a mandatory requirement of those joining and a part of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Door Set Scheme.

Management systems are essential in the running of any business, whether developed as a matter of experience or by following a set of formal principles.  ISO 9001 and Basic FPC identifies the steps that are involved in the running of a business and provides guidance on incorporating these steps in a formal quality management process.  The processes identified need to show how orders are dealt with from initial enquiry through the stages of manufacture and delivery.

The grant is only available for a short time, and applications must be received by 21st October 2011. If you are unsure whether you are registered and in-scope with CITB-ConstructionSkills, the requirement to access this funding, please contact the BWF on 0844 209 2610.
