Landfill Tax Charges are set to rise dramatically after HMRC announced a tightening of the implementation of Landfill Tax rules. The changes, announced on 18 May, mean that landfill operators must now be sure that the contents of skips going to landfill which qualify for the reduced rate are 'pure' – and do indeed qualify for the reduced rate.
With the inert rate at £2.50 a tonne and the active rate at £64.00 a tonne, the changes announced may cause enormous increases in the cost of builders skips. So members are reminded to take care when pricing for some work.
Many skip operators will consider putting up rates for skips from inert rates to active rates because their experience is that most skips arriving at landfill are mixed. In order to qualify for the lower rates, builders will have to do far more sorting on site and may have to use multiple skips.
