Since last years Government announcement that all suppliers bidding for public sector building contracts must use Building Information Modelling (BIM) from 2016, the construction industry has seen substantial growth in the uses of BIM tools and techniques.

Perhaps one of the clearest indicators of the adoption of BIM reaching tipping point is the recent launch of nationalBIMlibrary.com. BIM objects are now available to download in all major CAD vendor formats including Autodesk Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Tekla and Bentley.

All objects are developed to the NBS standard, to ensure generic and manufacturer objects are of a standard quality, and to guarantee a uniformly high quality experience for construction professionals accessing objects.

Want your products listed in the National BIM Library?Having your objects in the National BIM library will ensure that you are one step ahead of the curve and ensure that your products are visible at an early stage in the specification process, reducing the chances of substitution late. The process of getting your products listed on nationalBIMlibrary.com starts with you getting a free BIM assessment of your products by RIBA Insight. The service is all inclusive, meaning that RIBA Insight not only hosts your BIM objects, but also creates and maintains them.

Construction professionals visiting national BIM library.com can benefit from the latest articles on BIM and use over 360 generic objects from seven product areas, including ceilings, floors and windows. The list is already growing fast. Watch the video to find out more

The results of the latest National BIM Survey have been made available. The annual industry-wide survey, completed by nearly 1000 construction professionals provides the most comprehensive and accurate picture of UK BIM and its growing influence within the built environment industry. A preview of some of the findings reveals that:

• Almost a third (31 per cent) of construction professionals are now using BIM – up from 13 per cent in 2010
• Three quarters of those construction professionals currently aware of BIM predict that they will be using it on some projects by the end of 2012, and almost 95 per cent of all respondents expect to be using it in five years' time
• More than 80 per cent agreed that BIM increases the coordination of construction documents, with 65 per cent of those already using the technology saying BIM delivered cost efficiencies.

As noted, the use of BIM will be mandatory for all public sector projects by 2016. Contact info@riba-insight.com for a free BIM assessment of your products. The BSI (British Standards Institute) have published their guide "Constructing the Business Case: Building Information Modelling", which outlines how BIM can be of use to you and is free to download.
