The European Commission is aiming to present a new, more ambitious circular economy strategy late in 2015, to transform Europe into a more competitive resource-efficient economy, addressing a range of economic sectors, including waste.
The Commission is engaged in a thorough reflection on how the objective of circular economy can be reached in an efficient way that is fully compatible with the jobs and growth agenda.
The new strategy will include a new legislative proposal on waste targets, taking into account the input already given during public consultations, and by Council and in Parliament, in particular the comments made by many that the previous proposals needed to be more country-specific.
As part of the process, the Commission is launching a public consultation on the subject until the 20th August 2015. The consultation questionnaire itself is extensive and in multiple choice type format and addresses all manufacturing. By its very nature therefore it is very generic and answers will depend on manufacturing sector and context.
BWF will be putting together a response, so if you have any views please communicate them to matthew.mahony@bwf.org.uk by 17th August. The Construction Products Association are also responding and members are urged to respond soon so BWF can feed their views on.
BWF is keen to emphasise the benefits of using energy and materials from renewable sources, reducing harmful waste, and supporting durable and innovative products. Read our briefing page and find out why wood is the material choice for the Circular Economy.
Scotland is also consulting on priorities to develop a more circular economy where goods are kept in valuable use for longer – and products, components and materials are designed to be used again and again, benefitting the economy and environment. The consultation is aimed at businesses, public and third sector organisations with interests in how goods are produced, consumed and reused, recycled or disposed of. BWF will provide more information when it becomes available.
