Chris, apprentice at George Barnsdale told us his views on why an apprenticeship is a positive route into the woodworking and joinery manufacture industry

Why did you choose a career in woodworking and joinery?

I have previously worked as a fencer and labourer so next I wanted to have a career in woodworking.

What is your proudest achievement to date?

As part of my wider role at the company, I have been asked to be a fire marshal.

Why do you think an apprenticeship is a positive first step into the sector?

Through an apprenticeship you gain a range of experience in the different areas of the factory, using different skills and tools, which means that your able to choose where you work after. This also means that you’re a bigger asset to a company as you have valuable knowledge and skills in all key areas.

What advice would you give others thinking about a career in woodworking and joinery?

The two most important things are to listen and try to take in everything you are told, and to always ask questions if you’re unsure.
