Following an extremely successful campaign last year, ‘Gate Safety Week’ will be held again this year, from 12th – 18th October in a bid to continue to engage, educate and encourage best practice and improved standards across the industry. Most importantly, it is hoped that through the initiative, accidents resulting from unsafe powered gates will become a thing of the past.
In 2014, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) launched ‘Gate Safety Week’, which was initiated to raise awareness of the proper installation and maintenance of powered gates and how to prevent accidents. DHF had set up the Powered Gate Group in 2010, following the tragic death of two young children in separate accidents involving unsafe automated gates.
British Woodworking Federation Chief Executive Iain McIlwee offered his support for the campaign:
"As leaders in the field and in line with our promotion of standards, quality and best practice across the industry, the BWF would like to offer its support to the DHF and Gate Safety Week, in raising awareness of meeting safety standards for powered gates."
The initiative will be educating and informing professional installers, industry contacts and the general public on the dangers centred around poorly installed and maintained powered gates, in addition to how to report an unsafe gate and what to look for.
Providing in-depth technical support, DHF give their members advice on meeting safety legislation and provide comprehensive training for powered gate installers. Since setting up the powered gate training diploma scheme, almost 400 individuals have successfully completed their training.
