The BWF has facilitated a half day workshop through the Timber Resource Efficiency Partnership (TREP) on the issue of a possible ban on wood waste to landfill.
This workshop is being held alongside the Wood Waste Landfill Restrictions in England: Call for Evidence which was launched by Defra on 31 July (close on 28 September).
Defra, the government department who are responsible for this area of policy, will be in attendance at the workshop, and evidence collected will be used to draw up options aimed at ensuring wood waste is managed in a way that delivers the best outcome for both the environment and economy.
Government knowledge surrounding the management and economics of wood waste is patchy and it needs more information or members could be hit by costly new initiatives. The workshop will give BWF members an opportunity to feed back to policy makers before the wood waste call for evidence period ends.
Showing that wood is increasingly being disposed of more responsibly will have positive implications for the overall life cycle assessments of wood products. Some major building contractors will be present at the workshop so this will be an opportunity to highlight our achievements in reducing wood waste to landfill, increasing the share to biomass and increased recycling rates.
The aim of the workshop is to;
– fill the gaps in the understanding and knowledge base on the management of wood waste and,
– get the views of stakeholders on measures to divert wood waste from landfill and related practical issues.
The main areas to explore during discussions at the workshop will include
a) Management of wood waste
b) Markets and economics of wood waste management
c) Practical issues
d) Measures for diverting wood waste from landfill
Please contact Matt Mahony at the Federation if you would like to attend the workshop and have not registered already.
The workshop will be held at The Building Centre, Store Street on Wednesday 5th September, from 2.00 – 4.30pm
