Section 9 of Approved Document M (AD M) provides guidance for the provision of common stairs in blocks of flats. The objective of part M of the Building Regulations is to make reasonable provision for disabled people to visit occupants who live on any storey. The preferred method to achieve this is to provide a passenger lift. However, for the occasion when a lift is not provided there are recommendations given for the design of a suitable stair one part of which is that the going of each step should not be less than 250mm and for tapered treads this should be measured at a point 270mm from the inside of the tread.
