The international quality management standard, ISO 9001, and the environmental management system standard ISO 14001, are both set for structural changes later this year.
ISO 9001 identifies the steps involved in the running of a business and provides guidance on incorporating these steps in a formal quality management process. Covering the order process from the initial enquiry through the stages of manufacture and delivery, the standard outlines ways to achieve, as well as benchmark, consistent performance and service. Currently ISO 9001:2008 is the most recent version of the standard.
ISO14001 is designed to address the delicate balance between maintaining profitability and reducing environmental impact.
The new ISO 9001 structure is expected in September 2015 and will be based on Annex SL – the new high level structure (HLS) that brings a common framework to all management system standards.
The key changes in the proposed standard are:
– The emphasis on leadership
– The focus on risk management
– Emphasis on objectives measurement and change
– Communication and awareness
– Fewer prescriptive requirements
Certification to ISO 9001: 2008 will be allowed for a period of time following the publication of the new version of the standard in 2015, which will be determined by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), expected to be a couple of years
