Many large manufacturing organisations have looked at series of tools, philosophies and processes that collectively form the principles of lean manufacturing (LM). Inspired by the production methods at Toyota, LM seeks to eliminate waste (both in terms of materials and time) and continuously make improvements in the manufacturing processes to better quality and customer satisfaction. While a small business has the advantage of being more agile compared to a large business and therefore more able to implement changes, many of the LM tools may prove to be too complex or costly. There are, however, a few simple tools that are may prove to be more suitable for a small business to consider initially.
